About Hägghult
Black diabase has been quarried in Hägghult, west of Lönsboda in north-east Skåne province, since the late 19th century. The quarry has been in continuous operation ever since, and has had as many as 120 employees at times. Today, Hägghult is the world’s largest open-pit quarry for black diabase being almost one kilometre long, 50 metres wide and 75 metres deep. Hägghult is also home to the Black Mountains Work Museum, which shows how stonework has developed through the ages.
The black facade of Riksbanken, Sweden’s central bank, is made primarily of Swedish Black Hägghult.
